Learn Traditional Textile Art Practices

Tramando, a workshop series presented by Taller Puertorriqueño, is dedicated to empowering individuals and diaspora communities through collective art-making and the preservation of cultural heritage. Our mission is to support artists in cultivating creative agency, developing sustainable practices, and honoring the rich diversity of Puerto Rican and Latino cultures.

The series consists of four modules, each offering an in-depth exploration of traditional textile arts. The first three modules are immersive workshops, where participants engage in specialized techniques and professional development. Guided by expert guest instructors, these modules focus on time-honored practices such as natural dyeing, fiber spinning, and the intricate craft of mundillo lace making. Through these experiences, we strive to foster a deeper connection to cultural traditions while equipping artists with the tools needed to sustain their creative practices.

Public art: The Sanctuary Project

The fourth and final module of Tramando centers around the creation of a public art installation. In this module, participants will collectively design and construct a large-scale textile sculpture that explores themes of sanctuary, refuge, and cultural preservation.

The project will bring together the skills and techniques learned throughout the previous modules to create a meaningful, community-driven artwork. Drawing inspiration from concepts of immigration, safe spaces, and the resilience of cultural traditions, this installation aims to be a powerful expression of the collective creativity of the cohorts.

The completed piece will be unveiled at Taller Puertorriqueño at the end of the workshop series in 2026, offering participants the opportunity to present their work to the public and celebrate their artistic growth and collaborative spirit.

Artisano Salon: Professional Development For Artists

The Artisano Salon is a key component of the Tramando series, designed to provide professional development opportunities for artists. This two-day event brings participants together to explore critical aspects of building a sustainable artistic career, from pricing and marketing work to navigating funding opportunities. Through mentorship and guided discussions, the Salon offers practical tools and strategies to help artists thrive in the professional world while fostering a sense of community and collaboration. It is a space where artists can connect, exchange ideas, and gain insights that will empower them to grow their creative practices and succeed in their artistic careers.
