Public Art Installation

Design & Installation of Public Work

In the final module of the workshop series, participants from the preceding modules converge for the creation of a public textile art sculpture. This collaborative endeavor will be overseen by esteemed artists from Trama Antillana, Trama Textiles, Carmen Arteaga, and local textile artist Richie Lopez. Beyond its aesthetic significance, this art piece embodies the ethos of cultural preservation and community-led public art in Kensington

FOR THE PEOPLE

At its core, this project is a testament to the enduring heritage of Puerto Rican and Latino culture, deeply embedded in the fabric of Kensington. By engaging in the creation of this artwork, participants become stewards of their cultural legacy, actively preserving and revitalizing traditions that have shaped their community for generations. Each stitch, each thread woven into the fabric sculpture carries with it the stories and memories of those who came before, ensuring that their voices resonate loudly in the present and future.

Moreover, the significance of this project extends beyond its artistic merit. As a community-led initiative, it symbolizes the collective agency and empowerment of Kensington residents, reclaiming public spaces as platforms for self-expression and cultural affirmation. The outdoor installation of the artwork serves as a visual anchor of cultural identity in the physical landscape of the neighborhood. Its presence not only beautifies the surroundings but also fosters a sense of pride and belonging among residents, reaffirming their connection to place and heritage.

Accompanied by a photography exhibition documenting the entire creative journey, captured by the talented youth of Photography Without Borders, Taller Puertorriqueno's youth photography group, this project becomes a living testament to the resilience and creativity of the Kensington community. Through the lens of Taller Puertorriqueno's Tramando workshop series, it exemplifies the transformative power of art in fostering unity, preserving cultural heritage, and revitalizing communities from within.
